Objectives
The study aimed to assess the feasibility, perceived effectiveness, and politico-legal environment around the introduction of standardized packaging and the impact of larger graphic health warnings as tobacco control measures in India.
Methodology
- A pilot was conducted in October-November, 2015 in purposefully selected urban and rural communities of Delhi (North) and Telangana (South) respectively using an interviewer-administered questionnaire.
- Participants aged 13+ years were selected from community settings in Delhi and Telangana to ensure the representation of males/females, tobacco users/non-users, and adults/adolescents
- Survey was conducted to assess perceptions about the effectiveness of new graphic warnings and their increased size on standardized packs vs. conventional tobacco packs.
- Additionally, a policy review and 15 key stakeholder interviews were also conducted
Results
Outcomes suggested in Delhi, participants unanimously favoured large warnings on plain packs while in Telangana, large warnings on conventional/current packs were favoured.
