A community-based cluster randomized trial to test the efficacy of an intervention aimed to reduce and prevent tobacco use and to promote cessation of tobacco use among youth (10-19 years) residing in low SES communities in Delhi [Arora M, 2010].
Under the grant, the investigators from the University of Texas in collaboration with the Indian investigators were responsible for the development of the research design, modeling of the behavioral intervention, and ensuring the scientific integrity of the study.
Results
As a result of the intervention under Project ACTIVITY, the overall current tobacco use decreased more in the intervention (slope= -0.79) than in the control group (slope= 0.10).
Project ACTIVITY was successful in significantly increasing youth’s knowledge about the harmful effects of tobacco use and their knowledge about tobacco control policies.
